TOURNAMENT RULES

1st Annual Long Beach Cornhole Tournament Rules

**MINIMUM AGE: 18

 

THE CORNHOLE BOARDS (provided):

 

1. Should be placed on a flat surface 27 feet apart (front to front)

2. The cornhole board surface should be 2' x 4'.

 

 

THE CORNHOLE BAGS (provided):

 

1. There should be 8 bags, 4 bags of each color. Consisting of 2 teams.

2. Each bag should be 6 inches by 6 inches and have 1 pound of corn inserted into each cornhole bag.

 

CORNHOLE GAME PLAY:

 

1. Two teams of two people, termed partners, shall play. Partners shall stand at opposite cornhole boxes on the same side, from the perspective of a third person, and face each other, so there is no advantage given to one team.

2. Each cornhole team shall have 4 bags of one color.

3. All 8 cornhole bags begin at one end.

4. A coin flip (or rock,paper,scissors) shall determine which cornhole team has honors in round one if both teams want to go first.

5. One of the partners on the team who has honors shall begin play by throwing a cornhole bag at the opposite cornhole box.

6. A cornhole player may throw from anywhere behind the front of the cornhole box they are throwing from.

7. Game continues by alternating throws between the two opponent players until all 8 cornhole bags have been thrown.

8. If a cornhole bag hits the ground then bounces up onto the board, that bag shall be taken off the playing surface.

9. The next round starts when the other cornhole player on the team, which has honors, throws their first cornhole bag.

10. The cornhole game continues until one team reaches 21 or more points (for the game to end you must lead by at least 2 points regardless of whether or not you have 21 total points)

 

FOULS:

 

1. A foul occurs when any of the following happens.

2. A cornhole players foot goes past the foot foul line, termed a foot foul.

3. A player goes out of turn.

4. The player who caused the foul loses the throw when the foul occurred and the bag shall be removed if it landed on the playing surface.

 

SCORING:

 

1. The score shall be taken after all cornhole bags have been thrown for a round.

2. Points shall be given as follows…

 

        A. 3 points for a cornhole bag that goes through the hole.

        B. 1 point for a cornhole bag that is on the playing surface.

        C. 1 point for a cornhole bag that is hanging into the hole.

        D. 1 point for a cornhole bag that is hanging off the edge but not touching the ground.

        E. 0 points for a cornhole bag that is on the playing surface, but also touching the ground.

        F. 0 points for a cornhole bag that is hanging off the front edge and is resting on a cornhole bag that is on the ground (unless   the cornhole bag on the ground can be removed without making the hanging bag fall to the ground, then 1 point is given).

 

3. The cornhole team with the highest round score, adds the difference of the two scores to their game score.

4. The cornhole team who wins the round is given honors to throw first in the next round.

5. If both cornhole teams have the same round score then the game score stays the same and honors stay with the team who had it the previous round.

 

TOURNAMENT ADVANCEMENT RULES:

 

1. Tournament structure will be decided based on the total number of teams entered as follows…

                  A. 1-11 Cornhole Teams:  Randomly drawn, double elimination, bracketed tournament. 

                  B. 12-23 Cornhole Teams: Tournament begins with 4 randomly drawn pools. Every team in the pool will play each other, earning 1 "pool point" for each win and 0 "pool points" for each loss. When pool play is complete, the 2 teams with the most pool points from each pool will advance to an 8 team, double elimination, bracketed tournament (Each pool champion will play a 2nd place team from a different pool in the first round.)

                C. 24-63 Cornhole Teams: Tournament begins with 8 randomly drawn pools. Every team in the pool will play each other, earning 1 "pool point" for each win and 0 "pool points" for each loss. When pool play is complete, the 2 teams with the most pool points from each pool will advance to a 16 team, double elimination, bracketed tournament (Each pool champion will play a 2nd place team from a different pool in the first round.)

                D. 64+ Cornhole Teams: Tournament begins with 16 randomly drawn pools. Every team in the pool will play each other, earning 1 "pool point" for each win and 0 "pool points" for each loss. When pool play is complete, the 2 teams with the most pool points from each pool will advance to a 32 team, double elimination, bracketed tournament (Each pool champion will play a 2nd place team from a different pool in the first round.)

 

2. The winner of each game must be clearly identified on the clipboard provided to each pool (tournament supervisors at each set of boards will handle clipboards and answer any questions).

3. In the event of a dispute that cannot be solved between the teams involved, the tournament supervisor provided to that set of boards will have final say.

4. In the event of a tie (in total pool points) a winner will be determined using the following criteria in order…

                A. In a tie between 2 teams, the team who wins the head-to-head matchup is the winner

                B. In a tie between 3 teams, the team who has scored the most individual game points (sum of all points scored in pool games) will be determined the winner. The head-to-head matchup winner between the other two teams will be determined as the 2nd place team.

5. Games will be played one after another as quickly and efficiently as possible. That being said, it is important that you stay within a close proximity of the tournament area if your team is still in the tournament. Teams that are not present on time for the start of their game will be given 15 minutes to arrive before the game is considered an automatic loss. So please BE ON TIME!

6. The last two games of the tournament will be the 3rd and 1st place games respectively. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize money will be awarded at this time.
